Daniel Bell Portfolio

I have been creating art of various kinds for over 25 years and this portfolio represents a small fraction of my work. It is arranged chronologically to trace my path towards animation and it shows the things that have influenced my choice of subjects and how I see my work developing in the future.

Drawings

I began my creative journey in my teens, producing artwork for myself and, eventually, for commissions. Examples include t-shirt designs, original drawings using crystal gel ink pens and fine liner pen. I was fascinated by micro-plankton and marine environments and my art reflects this. Some of my illustrations of marine creatures are filled with smaller sea creatures and other objects and characters, as shown in the detail below.

This section consists of drawings, colour work and self-directed work.

Sculptures

In my mid-20s, I bought a pair of Leatherman folding pliers and started experimenting with wire sculpting. This development turned my art from 2d to 3d which gave me a lot more freedom. The materials used also allowed me to express my interest in the natural world in a different way. I have used 3 pieces as examples for this portfolio: the fly sculptures, a life-sized piece based on my body and interpreted as a goblin decorated in spirals and sea glass, and a sculpture I made recently depicting an octopus wrapped around a piece of driftwood. Once again, the inspiration for my sculpture was coastal habitats and the creatures that inhabit them. To create the sculpture I read about, observed, took photographs and filmed underwater videos to watch animals move in the water and created concept sketches of the subjects.

This section consists of life drawings, colour work, photography, video and self-directed work.

Monsters on the beach

Wire sculptures photographed on the beach. With these sculptures I am taking my inspiration from the many species of arthropods that I love. Here we have a jumping spider and a jet pack fly. Different colours of wire have been used to create contrast. I have also used some nitrous oxide canisters that I found on the ground at a festival as a jet pack for the fly.

Octopus Sculpture

The octopus itself is 135 cm tall and is made up of a 'skin' that is covered with coloured beach glass and beach finds. It consists of an interwoven mesh onto which these items are attached. The interior of the octopus is illuminated by LED fairy lights, so when it is lit up at night it throws shadows and shapes onto nearby walls.

The crabs used for the sculpture are made from wire and beach finds. They are used on the driftwood to create a habitat setting for the piece.

Animation

I have recently been using Blender to create animations. I am still learning the basics, but I provide some pieces that I am working on below. My main example for this section relates to an animation project that I have been working on for some years, as time has allowed. This is an animated children's story with an environmental theme. It's main characters are Martian Baked Beans. I originally planned this as a 2d cartoon strip, but as digital software became more accessible, my focus for this project has changed to animation.

This section consists of story boards, character drawings, self-directed work and videos.

Martian Baked Beans

This is part of a story board, an introduction to the Martian Baked Bean universe. The stories revolve around a group of space faring baked beans who are part of a hive mind and whose mission is to keep space free from rubbish. They live in The Tin - a mother ship - from which they go to work every day which leads to a series of encounters and adventures with other space characters. One of the subjects of each story is a material that gets recycled into something else.
